Getting Your Gutters Ready for Midlands Storm Season

Gutters do one job: move a lot of water away from your roof edge, siding, and foundation in a short time. In the Midlands, where afternoon thunderstorms can be intense, a gutter system that's clogged, sagging, or undersized fails exactly when you need it.

Start with cleaning. Pine needles and oak leaves pack into gutters and downspouts faster than most homeowners expect. Twice a year is the minimum around here, and homes under heavy tree cover may need more.

Check the pitch. Gutters should slope gently toward each downspout. When hangers loosen, sections sag and hold standing water, which overflows in a storm and eventually rots the fascia board behind it.

Look at where the water lands. A downspout that dumps right at the foundation is sending water into your crawlspace. Extensions or splash blocks that carry water a few feet away make a real difference.

Finally, check the seams and corners for drips after a rain. Leaky seams can usually be resealed, but rusted or split sections should be replaced. If your roof is due for replacement too, doing the gutters at the same time saves a second setup.
