Keeping a Columbia Lawn Green Through July and August

Most lawns around Columbia are Bermuda, centipede, or zoysia: warm-season grasses that love heat but still suffer when July and August stretch into weeks of high temperatures with spotty rain.

Mow a little higher in midsummer. Raising the deck slightly shades the soil, keeps roots cooler, and helps the lawn hold moisture. Scalping the grass short during a heat wave is one of the fastest ways to brown it out.

Keep the blade sharp. A dull blade tears the grass tips, and the ragged ends turn brown and invite disease. On our mowing routes, blades are sharpened regularly for exactly this reason.

Water deeply and early. A long soak once or twice a week, early in the morning, does more than a short sprinkle every evening. Deep watering trains roots to grow down where the soil stays cooler.

Don't forget the edges and beds. Clean edging along drives and walks, fresh pine straw, and trimmed borders make a lawn look kept even when the heat slows growth. If you'd rather hand it off, we offer recurring mowing and maintenance across the Midlands.
